Understanding Viagra’s Side Effects and Interactions

Viagra, while effective for many, can cause side effects. Common ones include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, and visual disturbances like blurred vision or sensitivity to light. Less common, but still possible, are heartburn, muscle aches, and dizziness. These usually are mild and temporary. Severe side effects are rare, but seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain, irregular heartbeat, prolonged erection (priapism), sudden vision loss, or hearing loss.

Medication Interactions

Viagra interacts with several medications. Combining it with nitrates, often used for chest pain, can dangerously lower blood pressure. Also avoid using Viagra with alpha-blockers, frequently prescribed for high blood pressure or enlarged prostate, as this combination can also cause significant blood pressure drops. Certain antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, and some antibiotics may also interact with Viagra, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you’re taking before starting Viagra.

Alcohol and Grapefruit Juice

Excessive alcohol consumption can intensify Viagra’s side effects. Similarly, grapefruit juice inhibits enzymes that process Viagra, leading to higher blood levels and increasing the likelihood of side effects. Moderate your alcohol intake and avoid grapefruit juice while using Viagra.
