Tamsulosin is an alpha-blocker medication. It relaxes muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow. Doctors prescribe it primarily to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition causing urinary problems in men as they age.
How Tamsulosin Works
By relaxing the muscles, tamsulosin eases the obstruction of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder. This leads to improved urinary symptoms, such as frequent urination, weak urine stream, and nighttime urination. The medication doesn’t shrink the prostate; instead, it facilitates easier passage of urine.

While predominantly used for BPH, tamsulosin also finds application in managing kidney stones. By relaxing the ureters (tubes connecting kidneys to bladder), it helps pass smaller stones, reducing the need for more invasive procedures.
