Understanding Clonidine: Uses, Side Effects, and Interactions

Clonidine primarily treats high blood pressure. It also helps manage symptoms of opioid withdrawal and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Doctors sometimes prescribe it for anxiety and hot flashes associated with menopause.

Common Side Effects

Expect potential side effects like drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, and dizziness. Less common, but still possible, are nausea, headache, and low blood pressure. Report any unusual symptoms immediately to your doctor. Gradually reduce your dose if stopping medication, to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

Drug Interactions

Clonidine interacts with several medications. Avoid combining it with other blood pressure medications, antidepressants (especially tricyclics and MAOIs), barbiturates, or alcohol. These combinations can significantly lower blood pressure, potentially leading to dangerous consequences. Always inform your doctor of all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, you are taking before starting clonidine.
