Potential Side Effects and Precautions

Doxycycline, while effective for acne, can cause side effects. Some are common, like nausea, diarrhea, and heartburn. These usually subside as your body adjusts. However, report any persistent or severe digestive upset to your doctor immediately.

Sun sensitivity is a significant concern. Doxycycline increases your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, even on cloudy days, and limit sun exposure, especially between 10 am and 4 pm. Use protective clothing when outdoors.

Yeast infections are another possibility. Doxycycline can disrupt the balance of your body’s natural bacteria, potentially leading to a yeast infection. Monitor for symptoms such as vaginal itching or discharge (in women) or oral thrush (in both men and women). Contact your doctor if you experience these.

Rare but serious side effects include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, and severe allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms. Also, inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions, especially liver or kidney problems, before starting doxycycline.

Taking doxycycline with dairy products or antacids can reduce its effectiveness. Separate these by at least two hours. Similarly, avoid taking it with certain medications, such as antacids. Your doctor can advise you on any potential drug interactions.

Remember, this information is for general knowledge and does not substitute professional medical advice. Always discuss your treatment plan, potential side effects, and any concerns with your doctor or dermatologist before starting or continuing doxycycline.
