Prednisone, while effective, can cause side effects. Common ones include increased appetite, weight gain, fluid retention, mood changes, and insomnia. Less common, but still possible, are increased blood sugar, increased blood pressure, and thinning of the bones (osteoporosis).
Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention. These include severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing), muscle weakness, and vision problems. Always contact your doctor if you experience any concerning symptoms.
Drug interactions are also a concern. Prednisone can interact negatively with several medications, including:
| Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) | Ibuprofen, naproxen | Increased risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding |
| Blood thinners (anticoagulants) | Warfarin, heparin | Increased bleeding risk |
| Diabetes medications | Insulin, metformin | Increased blood sugar levels |
| Potassium-sparing diuretics | Spironolactone, amiloride | Increased potassium levels |
| Digoxin | Digoxin | Increased risk of digoxin toxicity |
This list isn’t exhaustive, so always inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking, before starting prednisone. Careful monitoring of your health is crucial while taking this medication. Discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.
