Flagyl (metronidazole) interacts with several medications. Avoid alcohol completely while taking Flagyl; this combination can cause severe nausea and vomiting. Disulfiram, used to treat alcohol addiction, also has a dangerous interaction with Flagyl. The combination increases the risk of serious side effects.
Blood Thinners & Flagyl
Flagyl can increase the effects of anticoagulants, such as warfarin. This increases your risk of bleeding. Your doctor should monitor your blood clotting times closely if you’re taking both medications. Similar effects can be observed with other blood thinners.
Lithium & Flagyl
Taking Flagyl alongside lithium can raise lithium levels in your blood, potentially causing toxicity. Monitor for symptoms of lithium toxicity, including tremors, nausea, and confusion. Regular blood tests may be necessary.
Other Medications
Flagyl can interact with medications metabolized by the liver, such as certain antidepressants (like sertraline), and some seizure medications (like phenytoin). Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking to avoid unexpected interactions.
