Interactions with Other Medications and Substances

Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs. Anafranil interacts with many substances, potentially leading to adverse effects.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)

Combining Anafranil with MAOIs, such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine, is extremely dangerous and can cause a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome. A period of at least two weeks should separate the use of Anafranil and MAOIs. Discuss this with your doctor meticulously before any changes to your medication regimen.

Other Medications

Anafranil can interact with other antidepressants, antipsychotics, certain pain relievers (like tramadol), and blood thinners. These interactions can either reduce the effectiveness of Anafranil, increase the risk of side effects, or cause unexpected reactions. Always get your doctor’s approval before taking any new medication while on Anafranil.

Alcohol and Other Substances

Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants, like opioids or benzodiazepines, can significantly increase the sedative effects of Anafranil. This combination may lead to impaired coordination, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Avoid alcohol and other recreational substances while taking Anafranil, unless specifically approved by your physician.
