Interactions with Other Medications and Substances

Always inform your doctor about all medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and recreational drugs. This includes nitrates, often used for chest pain. Combining these with generic Viagra can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Certain medications can affect how your body processes Viagra. This means the medication may be less effective, or potentially more potent. Examples include:

Alpha-blockers: These treat high blood pressure and enlarged prostate. Combined use may significantly lower blood pressure. Azole antifungals: Used to treat fungal infections, these can increase Viagra’s concentration in your blood. HIV protease inhibitors: These treat HIV infection, and may similarly increase Viagra’s blood levels. Macrolide antibiotics: Used for bacterial infections, these can also elevate Viagra’s concentration.

Grapefruit juice can interfere with the breakdown of Viagra, leading to higher blood levels. Avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medication.

Alcohol consumption can worsen some of Viagra’s side effects, particularly dizziness and low blood pressure. Moderate alcohol intake is recommended, or complete abstinence if you have pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.

Consult your physician before combining Viagra with any other medication or substance. Provide a complete list of your current medications and health conditions to your doctor. Follow your doctor’s instructions and dosage recommendations carefully. Be aware of potential side effects and seek immediate medical attention if you experience any serious adverse reactions.
