Common Side Effects and Their Management

Ondansetron’s most frequent side effects include headache, constipation, and dizziness. Headaches often respond well to over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. For constipation, increase your fluid and fiber intake. Consider a stool softener if needed; consult your doctor or pharmacist for recommendations.

Dizziness can be mitigated by rising slowly from a lying or sitting position. Avoid activities requiring alertness if you feel dizzy. If dizziness is severe or persistent, contact your healthcare provider.

Less common side effects include drowsiness, diarrhea, and fatigue. Drowsiness may improve with time; avoiding driving or operating machinery until you know how ondansetron affects you is advisable. For diarrhea, consume clear liquids and bland foods. If it persists, contact your doctor.

Fatigue might be alleviated by prioritizing rest and pacing activities. Listen to your body and adjust your schedule accordingly.

Rare but serious side effects include prolonged QT interval (a heart rhythm abnormality) and serotonin syndrome (a potentially life-threatening condition). Seek immediate medical attention if you experience rapid or irregular heartbeat, confusion, agitation, high fever, or muscle rigidity.

Always inform your doctor about any side effects you experience, even if they seem minor. They can provide personalized advice and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
